Fruits of Unusual Size

Here’s a shot of two items from this week’s CSA share, with a U.S. quarter between the two to give an idea of their size. These obviously aren’t from the supermarket.

The cantaloupe was tiny in size but intense in flavor. Its sweet and tender flesh, easily scooped out with a spoon, was the perfect end-of-summer treat.

Off limits.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The ceiling in our kitchen recently sprung a leak, and rusty water has been dripping out for several days.

Check out that lovely tinted liquid by the sink. Mmm…

This means no cooking or baking for the Señor and me for an entire week. We’ve taken to washing our produce in the bathroom sink, along with our dirty dishes. (Hence, the leaf of lettuce bathing in sight of toothbrush and toothpaste, in the top photo.)

Eating out (or ordering delivery) never looked so good before.

We’re waiting for our upstairs neighbor to return from her European vacation so the repairmen can go in there and fix whatever’s broken. (I happily leave this to the pros.) In the meantime, Señor Habanero and I are enjoying our view of the massive holes our landlord drilled into the ceiling to help the water drain faster.

Soon to come, whenever our kitchen is back online: spam musubi (redux!), made with a *real* spam musubi mold!

Funny food.

Just for fun…

[piclens-lite-link]

Chicken parts at a market in Hasidic Williamsburg.

This reminded me of my friend Cindy, who refuses to say “chicken breast,” and instead uses the term “chicken chest.”

“Chicken tops” and “chicken bottoms” make me think of clothing for chicken, though.

Dim sum at East Manor Buffet in Flushing.

Thankfully, the food wasn’t as bad as the wokers’ spelling.
